Brittiläinen diplomaatti John William Wall (1910 -1989) alkoi 1950-luvulla rustata synkkää uuskummaa/weird-henkistä kirjallisuutta (kumpaa nimeä nyt haluaakaan käyttää) kynänimensä Sarbanin turvin. Kirjailija listasi suurimpien innoittajiensa joukkoon mm. Arthur Machenin ja Walter de la Maren. Vaikkakin herra Wall rustasi aktiivisesti vain muutaman vuoden ajan, näiltä vuosilta jäi käsiin nippu erinomaisia kauhutarinoita sekä yksi kokopitkä romaani "The Sound of His Horn". Sarbanin stooreista yksi on mielestämme ylitse muiden, loistava vuonna 1951 valmistunut novelli "Ringstones". Pahaenteisessä novellissa Brittiensaarten muinaiset ja brutaalit pakanalliset riitit ulottavat lonkeronsa toisen maailmansodan aikasille Northhumberlandin nummille. Suuresti arvostamamme englantilainen pienkustantamo Tartarus Press on jälleen tehnyt kulttuuriteon ja nostanut unohdetun kirjailijan takaisin päivänvaloon. Jos esim. Machenin ja Blackwoodin tuotanto uppoaa, niin aivan varmasti myös Sarbanin tarinat saavat ihon kananlihalle.

Sarban shows himself equally at home in the Middle East, where, against an authentic background of expatriate life, three further stories explore ancient legends with spine-chilling results.
